The 2025–2026 Academic Year will open with a keynote lecture by Professor Kiran Klaus Patel. In his talk, titled “How Europe Can Die… or Survive: Lessons from the Life and Afterlife of International Organizations,” Patel will explore how the histories of past international institutions can illuminate the challenges facing Europe today.

Kiran Klaus Patel is the author of the widely acclaimed book Project Europe: A History (Cambridge UP, 2020) which questions the temporality, myths and realities of European integration. His current research investigates how discontinued international organizations have shaped European governance since the 1910s. He will share some thought-provoking reflections on what history can tell us about current developments. Can institutions disappear, and what happens then? Are these lessons for survival?

The conference will be followed by a drink.
