Raquel Ruiz Incertis is a predoctoral researcher and lecturer in Journalism at the Department of Communication at the University Carlos III of Madrid (UC3M), where she holds a double degree in Journalism and Media Studies and a Master’s degree in Media Research, awarded with the Extraordinary Prize. She is currently pursuing her PhD in Communication and is spending three months as a visiting researcher at the IEE, under the supervision of Professor François Foret.
Alongside her academic career, Raquel has worked as a journalist for Spanish outlets such as El Mundo, as well as in the communications office of the Secretary of State for the EU at the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Research Interests and Stay at IEE-ULB
During her research stay at the IEE-ULB, Raquel is conducting fieldwork for her doctoral thesis, which examines the synergies between European institutions and the media, how their interactions may shape the ways in which European affairs are understood by citizens, and their implications for the development of a pan-European public sphere. Her research takes a comparative perspective on the communication surrounding the 2024 EP elections, analysing coverage in digital media in Spain, Belgium and the UK alongside the communication strategies of the European Commission, Parliament and Council.Being based in Brussels provides a unique opportunity to complement this analysis with first-hand perspectives from within the European communication ecosystem. At the very heart of Europe, she will be conducting in-depth interviews with EU communication and press officials, Brussels-based correspondents and Belgian journalists, as well as researchers and experts working on European politics and disinformation. She is also consulting documentary resources at the institutions and participating in seminars, conferences and research activities at and beyond the IEE-ULB.
The stay will be an opportunity to discuss preliminary findings with researchers at the Institute and to contribute to its interdisciplinary academic community, including through workshops linked to the BoundEUries project. By bringing together perspectives from journalism, academia and EU institutional communication, her work aims to contribute to a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities involved in communicating Europe in an increasingly fragmented and digital public sphere.
