The IEE-ULB seeks to maintain close cooperation with its alumni to keep the IEE community alive and to foster interdisciplinary, intergenerational and intercultural dialogue.
Since its creation in 1964, the IEE has graduated around 11,500 students specialising in European studies, forming a large community with a wide variety of backgrounds and career paths.
Among those who have studied at the IEE are: Pedro Solbes, former European Commissioner; Christopher Vajda, former Judge at the Court of Justice; Dimitris Avralopoulos, former Commissioner for Migration and Home Affairs; Pedro Sánchez, Prime Minister of Spain since June 2018; and Paul Magnette, former Prime Minister of Belgium and Clara Martínez Alberola, former head of cabinet to the President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker, to name but a few.
Discover the profiles of several of our alumni in the book “Alumni ULB – 50 journeys to European integration”, and alumni testimonials in our annual report.
Opportunities for exchange
The network aims to be a source of information and contacts. IEE alumni are regularly invited to take part in conferences, debates and social events organised by the Institute.
At least one mentoring session is organised each year to enable students to discuss with IEE alumni the prospects and challenges encountered when looking for their first job within the European sphere. Professional development courses also welcome alumni wishing to share more in-depth insights into their career paths, reflecting the diversity of opportunities within the European sphere and beyond.
Other activities are organised throughout the year to facilitate informal exchanges between members of the IEE alumni community.
"L’Institut d’études européennes nous donne la possibilité de créer de liens… C’est une communauté d’étudiants et de chercheurs qui sont tous passionnés et passionnants"
Bastien Charaudeau, diplômé 2016-2017
A diversity of career paths
Our 2015 study on the career paths of our graduates shows that nearly 30% of our alumni (cohorts 2003–2015) work in institutions at national, international and European level, 20% are active in the banking, insurance and corporate sectors, 22% work in consultancy and in associations representing various interests in Brussels and in the Member States.
Almost 12% of our alumni have moved into research and teaching in academic and non-academic settings (think tanks), and over 10% work in law firms.
