The IEE-ULB, the Institute for European Studies in Brussels
The IEE-ULB is an interdisciplinary centre of excellence in teaching and research in European studies. It is located at the heart of political Europe and at the crossroads of multiple international networks.
Why an Institute for European Studies in Brussels?
Founded 60 years ago, the IEE-ULB is one of the oldest institutes for teaching, research and public debate dedicated to European studies. The IEE-ULB is located in Brussels, in close proximity to the European institutions and transnational civil society. This strategic location provides a unique vantage point for understanding the EU in action.
In its research and teaching, The IEE-ULB connects different professional worlds and levels of governance from the local to the global. The Institute regularly calls on EU experts and professionals to contribute to its work and to train students. The Institute also strives to develop comparisons between European and national policies, between Member States, and between Europe and the rest of the world.
The missions of the IEE-ULB
Since its inception, the IEE-ULB has organised its activities around three complementary functions: teaching, research and public debate.
In terms of teaching, the IEE-ULB provides a range of master's and advanced master's programmes specialising in European studies. This is done in close collaboration with its sister faculties within the ULB:
- Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences
- Faculty of Law and Criminology
- Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management
Research at the IEE-ULB is characterised by its multidisciplinary approach (including political science, law, economics and history) and is organised around four research themes:
- Europe as an area of freedom, security and justice
- Europe as an area of economic and social regulation
- Europe as a community of norms and values
- Europe in the World
The IEE regularly collaborates with other European and international universities (for example, through special partnerships with Oxford, Cambridge and Waseda) to carry out its missions.
Finally, the IEE-ULB is a public space for exchange and debate with citizens, civil society, cultural and artistic actors, as well as and the media. Through conferences, publications, multimodal communications and innovative content creation, the IEE strives to reach the widest possible audience.
