04/12/2025 - Student's Conference: The State of Democracy and the Rule of Law in Europe

Published on December 2, 2025 Updated on December 3, 2025

Conference organised in the framework of the course Rule of law and mutual trust in global and European governance (Prof. Ramona Coman & Prof. Cecilia Rizcallah)

This conference brings together student analyses on the evolving state of the rule of law across Europe and its neighbourhood. The presentations explore a wide range of contemporary challenges: media narratives surrounding Italy’s cooperation with Libya on migration; the strategic use of sovereignty rhetoric in Hungary and Georgia; the impact of major political and legal affairs on the rule of law in France; political influence over judicial appointments in Spain; the implications of Belgium’s proposed "Quintin" law restricting the right to freedom of association; constitutional developments in Slovakia that threaten fundamental rights; and the deterioration of rule-of-law standards in Georgia under the Georgian Dream government. Together, these case studies offer a comparative perspective on how democratic principles, judicial independence, and fundamental rights are being tested across different political contexts.

This conference is organized as part of the course Rule of Law and Mutual Trust in Global and European Governance, taught by Ramona Coman and Cecilia Rizcallah.

It is part of the activity programme of the IEE’s Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence BoundEUries. The conference is open to anyone interested.
