Published on May 29, 2026–Updated on June 1, 2026
Speakers: Joyce de Coninck (Ugent), Eleonora Frasca (UCLouvain), Ruben Wissing (UGent), Thomas Verellen (Utrecht) and Chloé Brière (ULB)
In preparation of the next FIDE Congress (to be held from 19 to 22 May 2027 in Helsinki), BEDER, in collaboration with the IEE-ULB, is organising an event to present the draft Belgian report on the topic "The Union’s External Borders and Fundamental Rights". The issue is closely intertwined with European and national debates surrounding migration, with heightened tensions surrounding the respect of judicial decisions rendered by the Belgian Constitutional Court or the ECHR. The topic also touches upon the ways countries are preparing for the full implementation of the EU New Pact on Migration and Asylum, which aims to streamline migration policies and establish new governance structures.
The event aims to discuss the preliminary findings of the national report, and the team of rapporteurs, comprising Joyce de Coninck, Eleonora Frasca, Thomas Verellen, Ruben Wissing and Chloé Brière will present selected questions (between 3 and 5) that have emerged as the most pressing ones in the Belgian context and engage in discussions with the audience.
